Although on the surface it doesn't look very different from the dozens of Mel Tormé compilations available at any one time, the Rhino U.K. release The Very Best of Mel Tormé is easily the best single volume on Tormé ever done. Spanning the '40s to the '80s (which is a real rarity in the world of Tormé), it balances his hits and his best material, adds in the best of his live performances 9/

No better example than this CD. It's not the very best of Mel Torme but it's good enough for me! In most respects I agree with the BBC reviewer featured above. There are many beautifully rendered classic songs of the forties and fifties here - BEWITCHED, FASCINATING RHYTHM, PUTTING ON THE RITZ, LADY'S IN LOVE WITH YOU, LULLABY OF BIRDLAND and a /5(9).

Not the best of Mel Torme, really, but rather representative of how his larger than life talents carries any challenging melody. Torme remains an American treasure, ranking with the finest generation of vocalists of the s, 50's and through the rest of his career and life/5(11).

This is Mel Tormé at his prime, end of 50s, beginning of 60s. The program is varied, includes standards & non-, and all delivered superbly by The Velvet Voice. The problem is in the sound with the presence of eventual roughness around the performers, the type of 'saturation' which precludes from delivering purity, as it normally should/5(29).

The best tracks in this 4-CD box are mostly on Disc Two, songs recorded in the '50s with authentic jazz musicians backing him. Mel Tormé was a JAZZ singer. It was 'meshuga' to restrict him to being a crooner, yet even so he was the only crooner worth a plugged nickel/5(11).

For nearly 20 years, critics have been praising Mel Tormé's recordings for Concord, the label he spent the last 13 years of his career recording for, in a variety of settings. Fans of his '50s and '60s heyday, however, have often had difficulty approaching the work of Tormé's last 13 years. The Best of the Concord Years presents two hours of his best on the label, including a mix of live and.
